Countdown to Christmas with us as you read these daily messages of Scouts being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

The Utah National Parks Council, BSA received a meaningful gift this year from what appeared to be an anonymous young Scout. In an unaddressed envelope there was a dollar and an handwritten note that read, “I ernd this and want to help The boy scouts.”

This touching gesture was inspiring not only because of the person’s willingness to give, but because this dollar was earned and then given as a most precious gift.

This ninth day of Scout Christmas reminds a Scout to be thrifty. A Scout is thrifty. A Scout works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for unforeseen needs. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property. We tend to spend a lot of money on gifts and parties at Christmas time. But gifts aren’t a bad thing; in fact they are a great way of showing love and appreciation for those we care about. So how does one remain thrifty in this season of giving?

Well, you don’t always have to spend a lot of money on a good gift. Often, a good gift involves more thought, time and preparation than large amounts of money. A meaningful gift could cost nothing at all, or one could save to be able to afford the gift, but both again require forethought.

Yet, sometimes being thrifty IS about spending money. To pay for something that has more value than what you paid is thrift in practice. Think of the three wise men who traveled to visit the newborn Christ and offered him gifts of untold riches. While they may have spent earthly riches to give the gifts to the Christ child, they also knew the value of the gift they were giving was nothing compared to the priceless gift Jesus Christ would give the world as He lay on the cross.

May we remember to practice thrift during the holiday season by giving thoughtful gifts and remember the priceless gift of the Savior.
