The 12 Days of a Scout Christmas has become one of our favorite traditions on the Voice of Scouting, and we hope you will visit every day, beginning Friday, Dec 14, to find inspiring Christmas messages based on doing a good turn daily. On the third day of Christmas, consider doing your good turn by making hygiene kits for those in need.

For those experiencing homelessness, winter is especially trying. And according to a report from Utah, over 10,000 people became homeless for the first time in 2017. While that number is lower than in previous years, it still represents far too many people facing winter without basic necessities.

It can be hard to know what you can do to be most helpful in these situations, but homeless shelters like the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake have given us a few ideas.

One of the easiest things for people of all ages to do is donate basic hygiene supplies. Here is the list of items the Rescue Mission is always looking for:

  • canned food
  • razors
  • shampoo, deodorant and soap
  • toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • underwear and socks
  • towels
  • bed sheets
  • flatware
  • clothing
  • shoes

You can call your local homeless shelter to find out if they have any specific requests.

It is easy to take basic supplies like soap, shampoo, and tissues for granted. Do your good turn today by making sure someone else has the same necessities you do.
